I’ll be posting the marinara sauce recipe soon – we loved it! Once the ketchup is perfected, I’ll share that, too. Consider whether this will work well with the other. Since ketchup also contains vinegar, sugar and spices, it will change the flavor profile of your recipe a smidge. Replace it measure for measure to give your recipe a burst of tomato flavor and thickness. Use your blender or immersion blender to turn the tomatoes into a sauce of thick consistency. Then cook your tomatoes, a dash of red pepper, garlic, and onion powder over low heat for 20-30 minutes until reduced. 1 cup tomato juice: substitute 1/2 cup tomato sauce and 1/2 cup water 1 10-3/4 ounce can tomato soup: substitute 1 cup tomato sauce plus 1/4 cup water. I froze some cubes, made a bunch of marinara sauce for spaghetti and meatballs, had enough marinara sauce to freeze for future use and still had some Notmato Paste left to play around with ketchup recipes. In a pinch, ketchup can also be used as a substitute for tomato paste. To substitute canned tomatoes for tomato sauce, first, drain the extra liquid, but set it aside. Amazingly, there are plenty of types of canned tomatoes, including whole peeled tomatoes, petite diced tomatoes, and several others. I recently made a quadruple batch of Notmato Paste – if you’re going to go to the trouble, might as well have enough to make a few things. According to many cooks, canned tomatoes are the finest substitute for passata. Make Notmato Paste in volume and use it to create multiple sauces. If you dont have any tomato paste at hand in your kitchen, dont worry - there are a number of alternatives you can use. You can also use it to make barbecue sauce or marinara sauce. I just used some in an awesome Salisbury Steaks recipe, which will be my next post. Once it’s frozen, stick the cubes in a zip-top bag, keep in the freezer and use in any recipes that call for tomato paste. Depending on what youre using it for, you can substitute crushed tomatoes, passing it through the blender if necessary to create a smoother texture. One thing I like to do is freeze individual portions in an ice cube tray. Puree in a food processor and Voila! You’ve got Notmato Paste! It really does look and taste like the real thing! What can you do with your Notmato Paste? To get the rich flavor and consistency of tomato paste, simmer the puree for a while Add salt with basil, onion, and garlic to your puree to replicate tomato sauce. Simmer covered for 20 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Add water, chopped beet, and balsamic and white distilled vinegars.
